Temporary VAT change on food in Sweden from April 1, 2026

The VAT on food is reduced to 6% in Sweden until December 31, 2027. Here are some things to keep in mind. 

From April 1, 2026, the VAT rate on food in Sweden will be reduced from 12% to 6%.

Please note that VAT for restaurant and catering services in Sweden will remain at 12%. This means that food consumed on-site is subject to 12% VAT, while takeaway food is subject to 6%.

To ensure your accounting is correct from the start, it is recommended to review the following settings:

Tip: If you are unsure whether your sales should be classified as goods (6%) or services (12%), always refer to the latest guidelines from the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket).

Things to review

  • Products affected by the new VAT rate
  • Bookkeeping accounts and any VAT mappings
  • Any account rules linked to specific products
  • That the correct VAT rate is set in the system for affected products

Keep in mind that the applicable VAT rate is determined by the time of the sale.
